Cape Elizabeth Safe Passage Service team hiking up the Pacaya Volcano, an active volcano, on Saturday, June 30. We started at 1900 meters and we hiked to 2400 meters. Due to an eruption in April 2006, the trails to the crater on top have disappeared so we did not go all the way to the summit but we are climbing up the remains of that 2006 eruption.
The climb was yet another indescribable experience of this trip. Our feet were hot due to the steam rising from the cracks (the guides have to replace their shoes every three months or so due to the heat damage), the smell of minerals was strong, and we passed countless spots were steam was coming out of the rocks as we hiked. A few groups planned ahead and brought marshmallows. They were roasting them over the steam vents and they were toasted perfectly. Next trip I'm going to remember to bring some. We were headed up to a spot with live lava and fire erupting from the volcano. You can vaguely see it in the distance where other groups are snaking up the volcano.
